Happy Birthday to me!

Well, a day late, but look what present I got today and no it’s not an April Fool’s joke. Neale portaloo 010415 Action on site – a portaloo!   Hubby sent me this photo as I was on the T-way to meet a friend to shop in the city. Then when I got back, sitting in my email box, was a photo from our future neighbour and fellow Wisdom builder Scott. Scott portaloo 010415 Thanks Scott! Last time a loo caused this much interest in our family was many years ago when we did ‘Build a bog’ from Oxfam for my father’s Christmas: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/oxfam-unwrapped/gifts-for-diyers/build-a-bog-ou9001wa and last year my father-in-law got a Community toilet from CAFOD as part of his: CAFOD community-toilet http://worldgifts.cafod.org.uk/wg_productdetail?pid=01tC0000003s0GVIAY Did you know that there is such a thing as World Toilet day and that it is celebrated on November 19th each year? http://worldtoilet.org/ I’m not sure of the significance of that date. I thought it might be the birth date of Thomas Crapper who did so much to promote the popularity of indoor sanitation in Victorian times but it’s not. Apparently 2-ply soft loo roll appeared in the UK in 1942 courtesy of Andrex. Andrex brand-history Unfortunately the Bursar and Matron at my Scottish boarding school in the ‘70’s were firm believers in Izal instead. izal   Boy did we hate that stuff – at least we never ran out of tracing paper! One of the first issues raised at the new School Council was soft loo paper and sad to say it is the only thing I remember it achieving. Going back to today my friend Dianne was very amused at my excitement over the portaloo and asked if I had seen the 2006 Aussie classic film called ‘Kenny’ all about a portaloo cleaner. Well I’ve seen ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ and ‘Red Dog’ so I spent a whole $10 to buy this classic. Funnily enough my hubby doesn’t seem too enthusiastic to sit down and watch it with me….

Having lived here as a child in the 60's I fell in love with Australia and always hoped to one day be able to visit again. So when the opportunity came to move here with my husband's job we decided nothing ventured nothing gained and decided to go for it even though it was hard to leave our family and friends behind in the UK. So now we're here lock, stock and barrel, children and pets too and embarking on building a new home.

  1. Beautiful photos of the portaloo I must say! Oh, and congratulations!

Those are some interesting facts about loo paper. That Izal looks like a form of torture. Though I have often wondered what people used to do before loo paper was invented, I think it’s something we take very much for granted.

    • Thanks trixee.
I have updated my post to include a link to the world toilet day site. Apparently 40% of the world’s population have no access to a toilet which is a horrific statistic.

      • That’s shocking. I did wonder when I wrote about taking loo paper for granted, how many people don’t even have toilet paper, if they don’t even have a loo. 40% is a lot of people!

  2. Congratulations, very exciting. I cant wait to see a loo on our block. We signed our consolidated tender today. Slowly getting there.

  3. A beautiful photo of the loo in the morning mist! I did know there was a world toilet day. I used to read a hilarious blog called the Tiger Father who wrote about this from time to time. He used to feature a golden toilet. I love the gift idea. I’ll keep that in mind for our future family Christmases.

    • I’ve had a quick look and TEAR Australia do a gift of a toilet for $70.
Wateraid will help a family design and build a hygienic pit toilet for $50.
Caroma and the Australian Red Cross worked together to raise awareness about World Toilet Day in 2010/11 by having a line of loos in Sydney’s CBD Wynyard Park, I wonder if they will do it again this year.

  4. P.S. Happy (belated) birthday!

  5. Happy belated birthday Dea! I see Wisdom came to the party and presented you with the portaloo. First milestone in the exciting construction phase! Bring it on 🙂
