Well, a day late, but look what present I got today and no it’s not an April Fool’s joke. Action on site – a portaloo! Hubby sent me this photo as I was on the T-way to meet a friend to shop in the city. Then when I got back, sitting in my email box, was a photo from our future neighbour and fellow Wisdom builder Scott. Thanks Scott! Last time a loo caused this much interest in our family was many years ago when we did ‘Build a bog’ from Oxfam for my father’s Christmas: http://www.oxfam.org.uk/shop/oxfam-unwrapped/gifts-for-diyers/build-a-bog-ou9001wa and last year my father-in-law got a Community toilet from CAFOD as part of his: http://worldgifts.cafod.org.uk/wg_productdetail?pid=01tC0000003s0GVIAY Did you know that there is such a thing as World Toilet day and that it is celebrated on November 19th each year? http://worldtoilet.org/ I’m not sure of the significance of that date. I thought it might be the birth date of Thomas Crapper who did so much to promote the popularity of indoor sanitation in Victorian times but it’s not. Apparently 2-ply soft loo roll appeared in the UK in 1942 courtesy of Andrex. Unfortunately the Bursar and Matron at my Scottish boarding school in the ‘70’s were firm believers in Izal instead. Boy did we hate that stuff – at least we never ran out of tracing paper! One of the first issues raised at the new School Council was soft loo paper and sad to say it is the only thing I remember it achieving. Going back to today my friend Dianne was very amused at my excitement over the portaloo and asked if I had seen the 2006 Aussie classic film called ‘Kenny’ all about a portaloo cleaner. Well I’ve seen ‘Priscilla Queen of the Desert’ and ‘Red Dog’ so I spent a whole $10 to buy this classic. Funnily enough my hubby doesn’t seem too enthusiastic to sit down and watch it with me….
