Mittens for koalas

Summer is in full swing here and so unfortunately are the bush fires with Victoria and South Australia bearing the brunt of them.

I read a report on the wildlife caught up in them, followed a link and ended up spending a day making mittens for koalas with burnt paws.

I dug out my mother’s 1970’s Bernina sewing machine, my clean rag recycling bag and a ball of wool and set to. It ended up a family affair with my son cutting the woollen ties and his girlfriend, a costume designer, helping to sew them on. Bit different to the Joseph costumes she has being doing this week or the Lord of the Rings Tauriel and Kili.

Anyway behold the fruits of our labour

23 pairs of very dapper City pin stripe mittens.

Next up is a call for pouches for orphaned possums, kangaroos and wallabies, sewing pattern to be issued shortly.

Having lived here as a child in the 60's I fell in love with Australia and always hoped to one day be able to visit again. So when the opportunity came to move here with my husband's job we decided nothing ventured nothing gained and decided to go for it even though it was hard to leave our family and friends behind in the UK. So now we're here lock, stock and barrel, children and pets too and embarking on building a new home.
